While the majority of us work to keep the skin looking young and healthy by applying daily serums and moisturisers, few of us wear an SPF all year round. This may sound a little over the top, but even the winter sun can cause long-term damage to the skin.
Just a few extra minutes spent each day applying SPF can reduce the development of fine lines and wrinkles, keeping skin looking youthful and healthy for years to come. A long-term youthful glow really is possible-but it’s all about the steps you take now and the products you choose to put on your skin that makes the difference in the long run.
The fact of the matter is we just weren’t educated well about SPF in our youth. Today our understanding of the way in which the sun causes damage to the skin is far more advanced than it was just ten years ago. In addition product development now means there are loads of fantastic products on the market to help protect your skin, meaning there is something that works for everyone-yes, even those who only use natural and organic products. When you can apply SPF in multiple ways today, there really is no excuse not to, and there’s a product to suit everyone.
We are all well aware of just how damaging the midday summer sun can be, but it’s only recently we have started to come round to the idea of wearing SPF in the winter too. I’m sure many of you will remember shying away from the foundations that contained ‘15% SPF’ in the winter, thinking ‘well I’ve got to get some sun on my skin’. The truth of the matter is that SPF really is important all year round, and it does make a difference to the pace in which your skin ages.
Even on cloudy days, around 80% of the sun’s UV rays still penetrate through the clouds, meaning the general theory of ‘if I can’t see the sun it won’t damage my skin’ incorrect. UV rays are also still a problem during the winter, just because you can’t feel the sun on your skin, doesn’t mean it isn’t causing damage.
The best way to ensure you protect your skin is by applying SPF every day, choosing a high factor in the summer, and a medium to low factor in the winter. Not only will this work towards reducing your risk of skin cancer, it will also help you lessen your chance of suffering premature ageing, keeping your youthful glow and healthy looking skin for years to come.
If you’re looking for an eco-friendly or organic sun protection product, there are some fantastic products available. Further more, many sun protection products have a dual-purpose, in that they also work to nourish and moisturise the skin.
A favourite of ours is the Classic Sunscreen moisturiser by Coola. With SPF 30 the moisturising lotion can be applied as a normal moisturiser, but has the added benefit of a skin-protecting SPF. We also love the Après Soleil Exotic Shimmer Body Oil by Soleil Toujours, which provides the perfect hint of shimmer and a touch of bronze, and can be safely applied over any SPF lotion.
