If you are anything like us Coffee is probably a “Morning Essential” But what about the effects of coffee on your skin?!?!
Opinion is divided; some are convinced that coffee can worsen acne and dryness, while others say it doesn’t have any effect on the complexion.
Read on to find out what science says on this
According to this recent preleminary study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, drinking lots of regular coffee is linked to a reduced rate of developing cancerous melanoma. In the 10-and-a-half-year study, researchers analyzed the food habits of nearly 450,000 people—and what they found was surprising. Those with a coffee intake of more than four cups per day had a 20% lower risk of malignant melanoma compared to non–coffee drinkers. Now, this doesn’t mean you need to up your coffee intake —the study’s authors do caution their results are preliminary.
Stress can trigger break outs. Why? Because the same stress hormones (e.g., cortisol) that get released can also trigger acne—the insulin increase, can cause the skin to produce excess oil, over-produce new skin cells, and increase the body’s inflammation levels. Researchers found that those who drank a cup of coffee before going through a stressful event saw a 211% increase in cortisol levels, versus those who didn’t drink coffee. So, coffee can heighten your stress levels, which in turn can cause your body to over-produce insulin: not great if you’re already struggling with acne.
Coffee has caffeine, which is a diuretic and therefore dehydrating. True or False? A little bit of both. Recent research has found that caffeine is a very mild diuretic at most; with some studies even claiming that there was no difference between people who consume coffee versus water. The jury is out, so for now we recommend keeping your daily H20 intake up!
